Frequently Asked Questions - Door Knobs
What is a passage function door knob?
Passage function doorknobs are non-locking knobs. They have a latch that keeps the door closed, but there is no lock mechanism, so the door always remains unlocked. Passage doorknobs are typically used on hall or closet doors that have no need for a lock.
What is a privacy function door knob?
Privacy door knobs have a locking mechanism for privacy and are typically used on a bedroom or bathroom door. Privacy locks don't provide the amount of security that an exterior keyed lock would so they are not recommended for exterior doors. Some privacy locks have a turn button lock mechanism in the knob, while others have a push-button or push pin in the rosette. They are also shipped with a generic unlocking tool that can be used to unlock the door in the event of an emergency. There is a pinhole in the knob or rosette on the exterior half of the knob where the generic unlocking tool is inserted to unlock.
What is an entrance function door knob?
Entrance doorknobs have a key cylinder on the outside of the door and a push-button lock on the interior. Entrance knobs are used on any door that needs the security of a key cylinder which are typically exterior doors. Entrance knobs are often used in conjunction with a deadbolt for additional security and can be keyed alike other entrance knobs and deadbolts of the same brand.
What is a single dummy function?
Single dummy knobs are for aesthetics only. They have no latch mechanism and are single-sided and surface-mounted to the door. These are typically used on double closet doors that use a ball catch mechanism at the top of the door or on the inactive side of a double door (french door).
Can my door knobs be keyed alike?
Yes, we can key doorknobs alike as long as they use the same key cylinder type - this means you typically want to order all locks of the same brand.
What are door knobs made of?
We have doorknobs from all different brands and not all are made the same. Brands like Kwikset, Schlage, Sure-loc, and others are zinc die-cast construction while others like Emtek, Linnea, and Baldwin are made of solid brass or stainless steel. The material knobs are made of doesn't always mean they will last longer, however, there is a definite difference in how the knobs look and feel.
Are the more expensive brands of door knobs worth the cost?
In most cases, the warranty on the higher-end brands of door hardware is very similar to the less expensive models. High-end brands offer solid brass or stainless steel construction and many more possible configurations to coordinate with your design. If you're looking for a high-end feel and custom look, brands like Emtek, Baldwin, Linnea, Grandeur, and Cavilock, for example, will be a great product for you. If you are just looking for the best value and don't care as much about design, the less expensive zinc die-cast styles might be a better fit for you.
What is backset?
Backset is the measurement from the edge of your door to the center of the bore hole (the large hole where the knob is mounted). There is an industry-standard backset that most door shops use which is 2 3/8" or 2 3/4". Interior doors typically have 2 3/8" backset. Exterior doors could be either but are frequently 2 3/4" backset because exterior doors have a larger jamb to accommodate weatherstripping. Even though these are industry standards, it is always worth measuring your doors before ordering because you never know which measurement the guy prepping your doors decided to use. Less expensive hardware is offered with adjustable backsets, while with higher-end hardware you must specify one or the other.
A few decades ago it was fairly common to have a 5-inch backset. Options for a 5" backset are very limited, but we do have some available. Some commercial hardware is available with 2 3/8, 2 3/4, 3 3/4 and even 5-inch backset. Specify when ordering.
